The Vermont Book of Hours was commissioned by the Vermont Arts Council and funded by philanthropist Lyman Orton. Hird was asked to map out a vision for Vermont’s future. The 12 watercolor paintings whose format was based on the medieval Les Tres Riches Heures gave a monthly vision of life rooted in the state’s agrarian present. Each painting illustrated parts of the economic and ecological puzzles that face the state.  The project exhibited in Washington, DC’s Senate Rotunda as well as individual Vermont towns and museums in 2009 and 2010.
